Three Capacitor Geometries — Three Formulas

Every capacitor can be built from parallel plates, coaxial cylinders or concentric spheres. The difference is in how Gauss's law integrates E-field to get voltage V from charge Q — and therefore how capacitance C = Q/V depends on the geometry. Our existing parallel plate calculator covers one extreme; this page covers the cylindrical and spherical cases that arise whenever plates are not planar.

Coaxial cylinderC = 2π ε₀εᵣ L / ln(b/a)Length / ln(b/a)Coax cable, vacuum variable

Self-Capacitance Is Invisible But Critical

The self-capacitance of a bare metal sphere in air — C = 4π ε₀ R — matters in two places most hobbyists miss. First, every antenna has some self-capacitance (roughly 2 pF/cm of length) that detunes resonant circuits. Second, every Tesla coil top load forms a spherical capacitor with the ground plane — 30 cm diameter sphere ≈ 17 pF, which dominates the secondary coil's resonant frequency calculation.

Coaxial cables are the cylindrical case. RG-58 has a = 0.4 mm inner diameter (center conductor), b = 3.7 mm outer inner diameter, dielectric Polyethylene (εᵣ ≈ 2.3). Plugging in: C = 2π × 8.85×10⁻¹² × 2.3 / ln(3.7/0.4) = 101 pF per meter — which matches the manufacturer's datasheet exactly.

DIY Capacitor Variants — Rolled, Salt Water, Vacuum & Butterfly

🧂

Salt-Water Capacitor

Two aluminum cans in salt water — the water is the dielectric. Capacitance scales with surface area. Use a cylinder of water in a beaker with two concentric metal electrodes. εᵣ ≈ 80 for deionized, lower for tap/salt water.

Not practical for production — this is classic hobbyist electronics.

🎞️

Rolled Capacitor

Roll two foils with separator paper — the outer foil is one plate, the inner foil the other. Geometric capacitance follows the cylinder formula (use average radius), but the effective capacitance is ~2× higher due to layered parallel coupling. The oxide thickness is actually what determines production aluminum electrolytics.

Typical capacitance density: 1–10 µF/cm³ for small-signal parts.

🔬

Vacuum Variable

Two interleaved sets of coaxial copper cylinders — rotating changes overlap length. Our cylinder formula with varying L gives capacitance directly. Handles kilowatts at MHz frequencies without arcing because vacuum has both high breakdown strength and zero loss tangent.

Used in legacy AM/FM transmitters, obsolete in modern digital gear.

🦋

Butterfly Variable

Interleaved semi-circular plates rotating past each other. Not strictly cylindrical or spherical — it is a variable-area parallel-plate capacitor with arc geometry. Approximate: treat as parallel plate with A = r² × θ/2 × N plates, d = plate separation. 10 pF–500 pF range common.

Used in crystal radios, variable oscillators, 1920s–1960s broadcast gear.

Cylindrical & Spherical Capacitor FAQ

How do I derive the cylindrical capacitor formula?▼

Place a charge +Q on the inner cylinder and −Q on the outer. Because of cylindrical symmetry, the electric field only points radially and has magnitude E(r) = Q / (2π ε₀ εᵣ L r) at any radius a ≤ r ≤ b. Voltage between the two plates is V = ∫ₐᵇ E(r) dr = (Q / (2π ε₀ εᵣ L)) × ln(b/a). Rearranged, C = Q/V = 2π ε₀ εᵣ L / ln(b/a). Same formula applies to coaxial cables — every RG-type is literally a cylindrical capacitor, which is why they quote capacitance-per-meter (typically ~100 pF/m for RG-58).

How do I derive the spherical capacitor formula?▼

Place +Q on the inner sphere and −Q on the outer. E(r) = Q / (4π ε₀ εᵣ r²) from Gauss's law. Integrate from a to b: V = Q / (4π ε₀ εᵣ) × (1/a − 1/b). Rearranged: C = 4π ε₀ εᵣ ab / (b − a). When b → ∞, this reduces to C = 4π ε₀ εᵣ a — the self-capacitance of an isolated sphere (used to model Tesla coils and Van de Graaff generators).

What is a vacuum variable capacitor?▼

Also called a 'variable condenser'. Two sets of concentric copper cylinders mesh together — rotating one set changes the overlap length, changing capacitance linearly from a few pF up to ~1000 pF. Air is the dielectric. These are the workhorse of high-power RF transmitters, being able to handle kilowatts without arcing. Our cylinder formula calculates them directly: L is the mesh overlap length, εᵣ = 1.

What is a butterfly variable capacitor?▼

A rotary variable capacitor used in vintage radios and crystal sets. Two interleaved sets of semi-circular plates — rotating one set changes the overlap area, changing capacitance roughly linearly (or logarithmically in 'log law' versions). Formula is a hybrid between parallel plate (area changes) and cylindrical (arc geometry), but the cylindrical approximation usually gives within 10% accuracy for quick estimates.

How do I calculate a rolled (foil) capacitor?▼

Aluminum electrolytics are rolled: two long foil sheets wound into a cylinder with paper separator. Use the cylindrical formula with a and b as outer and inner radius of the roll, and L as the foil width — but this only gives the geometrical capacitance. In reality each roll layer is also capacitively coupled to its neighbours, so the effective capacitance is higher than the isolated cylinder predicts. For electrolytics the value is largely determined by the anodized oxide thickness (~10 nm) rather than geometry — treat the geometry as a sanity check on capacitance density.

How does dielectric constant εᵣ affect capacitance?▼

Capacitance scales exactly linearly with εᵣ (relative permittivity). Air/vacuum = 1, PTFE = 2.1, Polyethylene = 2.3, PVC = 3.3, Glass = 5.2, Mica = 7, Ceramic can be 10 to 15 000. A capacitor with a high-εᵣ dielectric gives the same capacitance in a smaller package — but high-εᵣ materials almost always have higher loss (higher tanδ), so there is always a trade-off.
